When the Bush Tax Cuts were signed into law by President George Bush on 5/28/03, Washington politicians had until 12/31/10, more than 7 ½ years to decide what to do when the tax cuts expire. Congress and President Obama agreed in December 2010 to extend the current tax structure for all taxpayers for 2 years through 12/31/12. Under current legislation, the Bush Tax Cuts will expire for all taxpayers as of 12/31/12 or less than 10 months from today (source: White House).
The 2012 Presidential election (11/06/12) is in 8 months.
